After spending more than 3/4 hrs, I had almost given up on the "offline maps" because J9 was not allowing me to set the location as "Storage Card" in the settings.
Finally I read somewhere that JBed is better than J9 so thought of giving a last try and guess what...it worked like a charm...
BTW, my phone is T-Mobile Wing with WM 6.0
I had also followed the "fix" i.e. filecon.dll and fc.jar but no go...
So, the bottom line is,
forget the J9 and use JBed if are storing the maps on the storage card.
Use JBed from http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=49222&d=1188897204
IBM should really be ashamed of this flaw...!!!

Most users have stored maps working with the IBM JVM, so I guess there was a problem with your setup. Anyway, I'm glad to hear there is another JVM that supports stored maps!
I'm re-attaching the file here (the link you sent requires login), can anyone else test to confirm stored maps are supported with this JBed JVM? In fact, I found this other thread: http://www.ipmart-forum.com/showthread.php?t=241166 that confirms JBed supports JSR-75. The files linked there seem to have a tweaked heap size, that should help stability in mgmaps - again can you or someone else confirm if those files work? I can attach them if needed.
And finally, it would be nice to learn if the GPS works in JBed... Does your phone have a built-in GPS?
Best,
Cristian

thanks man...
to be honest, even to get the JBed, it took my more than 30 of my "frustrating" minutes...LOL
So it's really nice that you have given the direct link here...
I am still not sure, how can a company like IBM release this kind of flawed proggy...
Anyway,
all is well that ENDS WELL...LMAO
BTW, another diff is JBed allowed me to select the path using Browse button, in J9 there is no Browse button so it's even a bit difficult to guess if gmaps is able to understand the storage card path or not when we manually type "\Storage Card" in there ...
Another thing is I just wanted to DL some Sat maps for my surrounding area and I am not able to DL those using that famous http://www.mapcacher.com site.
So any idea or link where the steps are explained for this?

Oh, ... IBM is not exactly a software company, they have other products that look much worse. My opinion is that WEME was created some while ago, especially for corporate users, where the IT dept or the app developers would install it together with the needed java application(s).

OK, I didn't know that... at least the Windows-XP version of J9 has the browse button (but you have to install the JSR-75 libraries first as described in the installation doc).
Anyway, I'm more interested about the internal GPS... does it work in JBed? (does your phone have an internal GPS?)

I suggest you download only very small amounts of satellite maps from Google, as they have some kind of protection and temporarily ban you for 24 hours if you download more than 200-300 satellite tiles. Other than that, the rules to follow would be the same as for any other maps, select the area on mapcacher.com, download the .map file, use gMapMaker to download the actual map tiles, then transfer them to your memory card. For more info, see http://forum.mgmaps.com/viewtopic.php?t=725

Looks like this thread is a bit old but i'll give you the info anyways.
I have a vx6800 (htc mogul) hacked so that my GPS does work (i can confirm this).
i used jbed for my JVM so far its been the fastest and most stable.
GPS does not function in MGM however under JBED.
Intent JVM functioned very poorly for MGM so i stopped using it.
I've yet to try IBM's JVM. If GPS could be made to function with the Jbed JVM i think that'd be the best course of action. The performance of Jbed is noticeably better.

IBM J9 is working perfectly for me on both Windows mobile (O2 ) and Windows XP including stored maps using the JSR-75 patch. Only problem is that the full screen mode is not really full screen on J9.
JBED on the other hand has better full screen mode. However, Wikimapia service (in mgmaps) doesnt seem to work on JBED. EDIT: Its working now. yayy!!

JBED does not work on my Glofiish x600... I installed mgmaps but every time I try to run it under JBED, it crashes immediately =(
IBM J9 works rather good at the same time

I am trying to use stored maps on my AsusP320. The phone comes with a preinstalled Jbed but it does not have JSR-75 (I guess) since it gives the notorious "file storage" error.
I installed this JBed (attached above in this thread). When it starts, it just displays a bright white screen and stalls. The phone does not hang though. Any suggestions...

Hi Cristian,
Can you attach the JBed3D files for WM6 from the forum you mentioned above.
http://www.ipmart-forum.com/showthread.php?t=241166
I will try it in AsusP320. It has internal GPS too. Let's see.
Thanks.

so for my HTC x7510 i decided for
Esmertec Jbed 20071119 3.1 3dMod HeapSizeFix 20080217 WM5
it works fine:
works with the latest version of MGmaps 1.41.03 (so i can select full screen nad it works)
works with internet
works with stored maps (tip: need to type manually Memory card/MGmapsCache; the Browse function doesn't work)
works wit internal GPS (tip: needs GpsPort in background and i use alsoTurboGPS in bacground to keep the display always on. In GPS settings of Mgmaps 1.41.03 i select GPSGate)
So the only bad news is display. Its 320x240 interpolated to 640x480.
It's a pitty. But that's how it is.
If any one knows for a better solution please let me know (the new HTC TOUCH HD has hit the shelves, will there be all these problems with it too?)

Anyone using an Xperia X1?
I just bought one and getting mgmaps to work fully looks like it will be a challenge.
The built-in java environment works for the most part, I can get ota and locally stored maps as well, but it doesn't recognize the built-in gps (I do have a holux receiver but I haven't tried it yet). The whole thing is pretty unreliable and buggy as well.
If anyone uses an X1 please share your tips for getting it to work, otherwise I'll just try all the suggestions above.

Status update:
I have realized that the factory installed java VM is actually a newer version of Emsertec Jbed, version 20080822.2.1.
I tested one of the earlier versions posted here, they both seem to do the same: maps display fine but I cannot get them to recognise the internal gps (or establish a bluetooth connection with an external one for that matter).
I have gpsgate installed (not even the factory loaded google maps app received any gps data without that) but it doesn't seem to help.
Any tips? How do I set up the GpsGate output for MGMaps?
Also, I'd be grateful if someone helped me get IBM J9 sorted... Which version do I need? The Xperia is a WM 6.1 phone with an 800*480 touchscreen. So in IBM's mind, is it a smartphone or a Pocket PC? I got the smartphone version from a mirror but I suspect I need the PPC (or was it PDA?) version bc of the touchscreen, and I found no mirror of that one.
I tried the official source of course but I'm only seeing a "contact your IBM representative" email link where the download link should be on IBM's site. Arrrrgh!

Summary: I can get MGMaps to run and show maps, but still no GPS position, whatever I do.
I would appreciate some help here...
All the JRE's give the "no internal gps in this device" error message when I try to set GPS to "internal". With J9 I can use the Serial setting, and both J9 and Jbed allow the GPSGate setting... but I get no position.
Any tips? Perhaps some change in the GPS settings of the phone, GPSPort or MGMaps? What COM ports or whatever sources does MGMaps attempt to read from?
(Current phone settings: GPS program port: COM4, hardware port: none, Manage GPS automatically: enabled.)
Details:
I've tried 3 or four JBed versions. The best one so far seems to be: Esmertec Jbed 20071119 3.1 3dMod HeapSizeFix 20080217 WM5.zip
This is pretty stable and displays stuff at a reduced resolution which is a good thing a lot of the time. Java stuff was designed for much smaller resolutions so at native res things get incredibly tiny. At native res, it's tough to tap the zoom buttons on the screen in mgmaps even with a stylus.
I installed the smartphone version of J9 and was badly disappointed. MGMaps crashes if I open or close the keyboard (ie. when the screen needs to rotate). Screen rotations work fine in other apps in J9, and they also work fine in MGMaps in JBed. Anyway, I just started the app with the keyboard open... menu softkeys don't always work, and when I managed to get into the menu and set GPS to GPSGate it still didn't get a gps position.

Using the Asus A696 (WM6.0) it works (although with a twist) - click the button under "Browse..." and the "Cancel" button becomes "Menu", choose "Browse..." from there. Should work on WM5 as well.
So for the A696 - using the same Jbed (the WM6 version) GPS works only through GPSGate via TCP, search works but some of the tiles have boxes around them and the menu disappears after searching (can't wait for the native WM/touchscreen version). Tested on latest stable (1.39.17) and latest dev (1.41.03).
EDIT: Center on GPS (9) does work but does not stay active (did it by pulling up the keyboard via a shortcut key).

JBed works with my HTC Touch Diamond and recognize its internal GPS.
Tested different versions as suggested in above posts. Only work using Esmertec Jbed 20071119 3.1 3dMod HeapSizeFix 20080217 WM5, with GPSPort (tried GPSGate but could not figure out how to make it work).
Thanks for everyone's input!
