What makes a CDMA cell phone different from a GSM phone? What component of a cellular phone makes them work on the different format? I know verizon (a CDMA network) and Edge (a GSM network) sell the same model of phone so what is different in these phones that makes them work of the different network. Could the CDMA component (possibly sim card?) be put in a phone that is exclusively sold by a GSM network? Would the software be messed up or would the same software possibly work??

CDMA and GSM are different standards and are generally not compatible, you can't take a component from one phone and put it in the other. The communication technology is not just in the SIM card, the card only contains user information (Subscriber Identity Module).

Even if a phone is marketed with the same name and it may be the same on the outside, the inside components are different.

Also, edge is not a GSM network, it's a data technology used over GSM, similar to other technologies (gprs, umts, hsdpa).

Still there are some phones that support both technologies -- for instance http://www.unwiredview.com/2008/04/18/samsung-w599-a-dual-cdmagsm-phone/. Anyway, MGMaps or other 3rd party software don't care what the underlying technology is.
