The latest version of MGMaps includes multiple language support, if you're willing to help and translate the language file, you can start right now!

UPDATE: Several language files are outdated, they were done for version 1.33 of MGMaps and several new features are not translated. You can start with the files below and check them against the latest English language file available. If you find any message IDs missing, translate the corresponding lines and add them to the translated file.

Quick translation guide:
  1. Get the language file or unpack it from mgmaps.jar (you can open the jar with winzip and extract /res/i18n/en_us.lng)
  2. Edit the file with a UTF-8 text editor (Windows Notepad is ok but it saves three additional characters at the beginning of the file, which may break support with some phones) and translate all the messages without changing the corresponding message IDs (numbers before the '=').
  3. Test the new language — replace en_us.lng inside mgmaps.jar with your translated file, or add your language file to the jar in /res/i18n and update languages.txt. Then reinstall mgmaps on your phone. NOTE: This will not work if you have installed the signed version of mgmaps, because the signature will no longer be valid. To test you'll need to uninstall it completely (and lose all settings) then install the unsigned version. If this is a problem, test in an emulator on your PC, for example IBM WEME as described in this thread.
  4. Let us know about your translation and we'll include it in the next mgmaps release.
If you have any questions, post them below.

Thanks,
Cristian

Hi there, I think I'll make a Hungarian version.

What should I open the .lng with? I tried notepad and it opens it fine, but then obviously I'll be saving a .txt at the end. Do I just rename it to .lng or should I use some other programme?

Also, we have some funky accented letters: á, é, í, ó, ö, ő, ú, ü, ű. Will these appear correctly? Perhaps I should make sure to use a certain character coding?

I thought I'd ask instead of experimenting.

The .lng files are just text files, you can open them with notepad, save them then rename them back to .lng. You can use any encoding that you wish ("languages.txt" lists all languages with their encodings) - I would recommend UTF-8 as it should be recognized by most phones. There are some cases when the UTF-8 format saved by notepad is not correct, but I'll take care to change it when I include it with MGMaps.

Regards,
Cristian

Translated it into Hungarian... Something's wrong.
When I tested the app I got an error message at startup about like this:

12:19:44.786: ERROR fatal exception; class: java.lang.NullPointException, message: null, descr.:Exception while starting app

Tried adding it to the list and also replacing the en_us file with mine, no dice.
Attached the .lng, perhaps you know what's up.

Yes, it's the byte-order mark problem - see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Byte_Order_Mark. Notepad adds it when saving files in UTF-8 format, but then j2me does not recognize files with this mark. I've resaved the file using Eclipse (the development platform) and it works fine now, see the attachments.

Thanks, it works now.

There are a couple of typos and I'll shorten a few things so they it on the screen properly. This was a test version but I couldn't test it myself:)
I'll post a final version here when it's done.

I'm attaching the file that works fine. I've updated mgmaps v1.33.11 (generic) on the server and it includes the new language files. They will also be supported by all future versions.

Here's what I hope to be the final Hungarian version.
Again, I saved it with Notepad so it doesn't work as it is.

I made this by correcting my previous version and updating it to match the english lng extracted from 1.34.02.

I hope you can include it in future releases. Pls also send me a re-saved version so that I can test it.

Here is the language file and MGMaps with the file. I keep making changes to the language files as I develop the application, so it's never a "final" version. Smile
